Chiefs are so close to title

IN A match set to potentially decide the destiny of the Absa Premiership title, Kaizer Chiefs and Platinum Stars will clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow , kick-off at 3pm.

Only six points separate the sides with Chiefs leading the way with 55 points.

Stars , second with 49 points, are the only side that has defeated Chiefs in the league. Dikwena recorded a 2-0 win over them in Rustenburg in November 2012.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has not targeted the amount of points needed for his team to win the league, but has instead asked his players to get maximum points from the remaining four games of their league campaign.

“I am not one of those coaches that say in this block of games we need a certain number of points ,” said Baxter. “I don’t make targets ... I just prepare every game as well as I can. Until it is mathematically impossible for people to catch me then I will be happy with that. Until then I will keep rolling out the team and getting three points.

“We have led from the first kick of the ball and the lads have shown that at times they have good mental strength.

“It is going to be an interesting game on Sunday and both teams have shown all year that they have played good football. Our experiences from the past have shown that if we play well and carry out our game plan then we can beat any team in the league.”

Stars coach Cavin Johnson does not think the match will most likely decide the destiny of the championship, saying that his weekend opponents have already wrapped up the title. “This week is all about getting ready to play good football,” Johnson said.

“Personally, I think Chiefs have won the league already. I have said that all along, but we still have our own objectives – to play good football and continue to develop as a team.

“If you look at our matches against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup and then in the league against Bidvest Wits, we played some terrific football and that is the legacy I want to leave on the field.

“We have played some great games of football this season and have done very well to be second in the league and into the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup. We are very happy with where we are ... we will take those positive thoughts into the Chiefs game on Sunday.”
