Amakhosi reclaim their glory days

KAIZER Chiefs’ season culminated in a clumsy performance against SuperSport United last night. But the 1-1 draw will not bother Amakhosi much as it was enough to bring the glory days back.

As expected, the opening minutes were challenging on the Amakhosi team as they battled to contain their nerves in front of over 32000 of their supporters, clad in black and gold to see them lift their first Premier Soccer League title since 2005.

Glory Reclaimed. And what could have been the winning goal, scored by striker Lehlohonolo Majoro in the 48th minute, summed up just how lethal Chiefs have been in front of goal this season.

Sibusiso Zuma spoiled the fun and got the equaliser for SuperSport in the 88th minute.

But Chiefs are finally champions after a long wait, especially having made heavy weather of sealing the championship as early as April 30 when they faced Platinum Stars.

With coach Stuart Baxter suspended for last night’s defining clash after being sent off in a Nedbank Cup almost two weeks ago, club great Doctor Khumalo took charge and looked comfortable.

Well, at least more so following Majoro’s goal. There were plenty of reasons why Khumalo – as well as Baxter, who was watching from the stands – should have been frustrated and jittery.

Before breaking the deadlock, Majoro had two of his shots in the first half saved by SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Defender Siboniso Gaxa might have also been a rare feature on the score sheet on the stroke of halftime, but rushed his attempt, with Williams off his line.

Chiefs’ back four should be applauded. SuperSport, the three-times league champions between 2008 and 2010, made numerous attempts to force mistakes from the central pairing of Tefu Mashamaite and Erick Mathoho. It took substitute Zuma to breach the otherwise solid rearguard.

l In another PSL match played last night Orlando Pirates added to Black Leopards’ relegation woes by humiliating the Limpopo side 4-1.
