AN action-packed weekend of derby day rugby came to a head on Saturday as some massive school derbies were being fought out all over East London.
At Selborne College in the main clash of the weekend the Selborne first XV were battling out an extremely entertaining 25-21 win over Dale College.
Dale, who were looking for their 100th win over their long-term rivals thought they had snatched the victory with four minutes left when vice-captain Somila Jho went over for his second try to put Dale ahead 21-20, but Selborne captain Lungelo Gosa had the final say by scoring the match-winning try in the final minute of the match.
Hudson Park welcomed Queen’s College on Saturday for their big derby day clash.
Hudson fought hard, but were ultimately outplayed by a stronger side as they went down 31-24 to their Queenstown rivals.
It was Queen’s second victory over Hudson this season after they beat them 38-30 at home earlier this season, but the close scoreline in both games shows that Hudson were certainly up for the fight, and pushed the more powerful College all the way.
This was Queen’s third win on the trot since the winter break and they have built up a good head of steam going into their final couple of matches this season.
This was Hudson’s first loss since the end of the winter break and the team will need to brush off their loss with two important derbies left on their calendar.
Cambridge High School was the setting for their huge co-ed clash against Stirling High.
Stirling put on a superb performance to down the dangerous Cambridge team comfortably
33-20.
It was a great response from Stirling after they lost their first game after the winter break to Hudson last week, and they gained revenge on the loss they suffered to them earlier this season.
With Queen’s up next for Cambridge they will need to pick themselves up from this loss and head to Queenstown with confidence.
Grens travelled to Cradock for their derby against Cradock High and returned in high spirits after thumping the Cradock first team 52-14.
Port Rex Technical High travelled to Graaff-Reinet and were beaten 25-5 by Union High.
Looking ahead to this coming weekend derby days are set to be fought out tomorrow and Friday due to the public holiday.
Cambridge and Queen’s will battle it out in Queenstown tomorrow while on Friday, in arguably the clash of the weekend in the Eastern Cape, Selborne travel to Port Elizabeth for their derby against Grey Port Elizabeth.
Also Friday Dale will welcome Hudson Park to King William’s Town for their derby.
