League set to rumble again

SCORES of boxing fans are expected to cram the Downtown Boxing Gymnasium in Quigney today for the weigh-in of the Premier Boxing League (PBL) tournament scheduled to be held at East London’s Orient Theatre tomorrow.

The anticipation of the weigh-in stems from the late cancellation of the previous PBL tournament just hours before the boxers were due to have their weights checked last month.

Ndongeni is unbeaten in eight bouts while Bokolo, whose record is a bit patchy, has enjoyed a resurgence in his career including his revenge victory over another PBL participant and namesake Vusumzi Tyatyeka.

The power punching Bokolo, who trains at Eyethu boxing club where he shares a stable with former world title contender Ali Funeka, has promised to inflict the first loss on Ndongeni.

The pair made bold predictions in public ahead of last month’s cancelled show with the Duncan Village champion, whose gift of the gab surpasses his boxing skills, laughing off Bokolo’s threats.

Instead Ndongeni sang a farewell song for Bokolo during a boxing tournament in Mdantsane saying he would retire him.

The fact that Macbute Sinyabi is not a draw-card in this tournament is further proof of the exciting bouts on offer.

Sinyabi is looking for his second win in the league after beating Aphiwe Mboyiya in June, when he takes on Mthatha-born Capetonian Lwando Molwana in a featherweight scrap.

Unbeaten star Makazole Tete and Mzuvukile Magwaca from Cape Town will battle it out in a flyweight duel.

Magwaca caused the upset of the league when he beat reigning SA flyweight champion Lwandile Sityatha in July while Tete felled Mfundo Gwayana before fading in the late rounds to allow the recently crowned SA junior flyweight champion to force a draw. Tete has since left Vuyani Bungu to join Enothole boxing club.

The fourth bout will see Gauteng’s Cleutus Mbele facing KwaZulu-Natal’s Innocent Mantengu in a bantamweight bout.

The weigh-in starts at 12 midday.
