Trio back in Border frame

THE BORDER senior provincial team will be boosted by the return of Chevrolet Warriors trio Lundi Mbane, Aya Gqamane and Vuyisa Makhaphela for their Cricket South Africa (CSA) Provincial clashes against Northerns starting today.

Border will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Northerns in the CSA Three-Day Challenge and the CSA One Day Cup competition.

Mbane, Gqamane and Makhaphela return to the team together with allrounders, Gionne Koopman and Jerry Nqolo, who missed out on last weekend’s game against North West due to examinations.

They will return at the expense of Thandolwethu Mnyaka (out injured), Mkhululi Calana and Brandon Williams (away with the Warriors Colts team) and Kevin and Bevan Bennett, who are unavailable due to exams. Border coach Frank Plaatjes said the team welcomed the changes. as they offer a different dimension to the side.

“It’s quality players replacing each other ... the boys are going to add a lot of value to the team in our quest to get things back on track.

“Having Aya ) back offers us more options in the bowling department, he also comes in very handy with the bat and he is an outstanding fielder.

“Makhaphela was looking good for the Warriors before he picked up his injury and it will be great to have him back with Koopman and Nqolo too,” said Plaatjes.

Makhaphela, who recently recovered from a shoulder injury, is set to open the batting with Gionne Koopman this afternoon.

Gqamane is also expected to be part of the first XI playing team this morning, while Mbane will sit out the three-day clash and hopefully will be fit to play in the one-day game together with Nqolo at Buffalo Park on Sunday. Makhaphela has been out of action for a month doing rehabilitation work and recently resumed training early last week.

The Good Hope Cricket Club opener believes he is ready for the encounter.

“I’m really happy to be back, I thought I would be out for longer but I have healed very quickly.

“My main priority is to put together a valuable contribution up front in a good partnership with Gionne ) and put the team in a good position to win the game,” said Makhaphela.

Border go into today’s game on the back of a disappointing innings and 155 run loss to North West last weekend, which was followed up by a eight-wicket defeat in their one-day cup tie.

Border will also be hoping their impressive three-day record at United where they have not lost in years, in which they haven’t lost a game in years, will also play in their favour in the must-win encounter.

BORDER TEAM: Abongile Sodumo (captain), Shaun de Kock, Vuyisa Makhaphela, Martin Walters, Gionne Koopman, Burton de Wett, Aya Gqamane, Somila Seyibokwe, Darryl Brown, Jerry Nqolo, Lundi Mbane, Lwando Lwana, Ramano Ramoo, Yanda Pangabantu.
