Patience key for Warriors

CHEVROLET Warriors coach Piet Botha believes patience will be key to a solid start in the Sunfoil Series when they take on the Chevrolet Knights at Buffalo Park in East London today.

The Warriors, who are home in two of their first three games, will be searching for a strong start before getting stuck into the endurance tournament.

Botha said a good start on day one with either bat or ball is mandatory.

“Obviously it’s going to be important to start well in the first session whether it’s by ball or bat. It often depicts how the game will go.

“It doesn’t matter wether we are batting or bowling first, we need to look after our game and adapt to how the pitch is playing quickly and get the upper hand,” said Botha.

Former Free State batsman Ryan Bailey is set to make his Sunfoil Series debut for the Warriors in the opening clash and will be hoping to get off to a good start.

The 31-year-old showed glimpses of good form during the Momentum One Day Cup competition and will be looking to take his form into the longer version of the game.

In their opening game last season, second innings tons from Michael Price (105) and Davy Jacobs (103) and two first innings half centuries from Ashwell Prince and Collin Ingram propelled the warriors to a 161 run victory over the Titans in Port Elizabeth.

Warriors captain, Jacobs, reiterated Botha’s words on the importance of a good start.

“We’ve played good cricket for most of the Momentum One Day Cup competition and that came off a good Sunfoil Series last year so we are looking to continue with the momentum.

“As much as we have a stronger team this season on paper, we still have to produce the results on the field.

“We are definitely looking for a good start before heading up to Joburg to take on the Lions and then back home again to face the Cobras,” added Jacobs.

The Warriors will also be happy to have Rusty Theron back in the team after missing out of the four-day competition last season due to injury.

Theron last played a four-day game when he came up against the Sunfoil Dolphins in Durban in January last year and will be looking to get among the wickets with the hungry Andrew Birch up front. WARRIORS TEAM: Michael Price, Ashwell Prince, Ryan Bailey, Colin Ingram, Aya Gqamane, Simon Harmer, Davy Jacobs (capt), Andrew Birch, Rusty Theron, David White, Basheer Walters, Vuyisa Makhaphela.
