Elgar strokes Knights into strong position

AN ELEGANT century from Dean Elgar (122) and a fighting half century from Lefa Mosena (67no) batted the Chevrolet Knights to a solid position on day one of their Sunfoil Series clash against the Chevrolet Warriors at Buffalo Park in East London yesterday.

At the end of the day’s play Mosena returned to the pavilion carrying his bat and with Quinton Friend on three not out.

The pair will resume this morning with the Knights on 307/8 in the first innings.

Mosena brought up his half century in 108 balls and continued to be a thorn to the Warriors attack as he accumulated a 50-run partnership with Dillon du Preez (22).

The duo’s late cameo (53 from 91 balls) was ended by a stunning delivery from Andrew Birch when he castled Du Preez’s middle stump out of the ground late in the third session.

The Warriors bowling attack picked up wickets in all three sessions.

The hosts got off to a promising start and picked up four wickets in the first session before a fifth wicket stand of 113 from 164 ball between Elgar (122) and Werner Cloetsee (40) pulled things back for the Knights.

Fast bowler Andrew Birch found the early break and removed Reeza Hendricks for six in the third over of the day.

The visitors looked to consolidate before the introduction of spin did the trick for the hosts as Simon Harmer had Rilee Rossouw back in the dressing-room.

Rossouw was dismissed for a well negotiated 20, caught by Ashwell Prince at slip.

Wickets continued to tumble at the other end as Elgar continued about his business.

It wasn’t long before the firing Rusty Theron announced his return to four-day cricket with two wickets in two balls in his seventh over.

The Knights fell to 76/4 when Theron identically trapped both Rudi Seconds (two) and Diego Rosier.

The Knights went to the lunch interval on 83/4 with Elgar on 51 and Cloetsee on four.

The pair came back in an unforgiving mood and Elgar raced to his century before they brought up their 100-run (145 balls) partnership.

The Warriors got their breakthrough an hour and a half after lunch when Aya Gqamane bowled Elgar in the second last over of his second spell before Harmer struck two overs later.

The spinner had Cloetsee caught by Michael Price at a square midwicket for 40 from 79 balls.
