Border win one, lose one on road against Griquas

BORDER senior provincial coach Frank Plaatjes lauded captain Abongile Sodumo as he led Border to their second One-Day Cup victory with a fourwicket win over Griquas in Kimberley on Sunday.

Sodumo smashed a quickfire 74 not out off 47 balls to lead the defending One-Day Cup champs to their second win from five games this season.

Plaatjes said despite narrowly missing out on a win by a single wicket in their Three-Day Challenge clash on Saturday, his charges are on the right track in both formats of the game.

“Credit must go to the boys for the good cricket they’ve been playing with Sodz (Sodumo) leading from the front.

“We were in a very good position to win both games and had we pulled through, it would have been a good weekend for us on the road.

“I think when Sodz (Sodumo) and Darryl (Brown) had a good partnership going we let them back in the game when we lost those wickets. The three-day game could have gone either way,” said Plaatjes.

With the game shortened to 43 overs, Border sent the hosts in to bat first and they were set 232 for victory.

Vice-captain Shaun de Kock took 4/46 in nine overs as the other wickets were shared among the bowlers.

In reply, Border had a good start with Kevin Bennett’s half century (50 from 75 balls) before Sodumo and Jerry Nqolo (24) took the game away with a seventh-wicket stand of 104.

Border are now 10th on the 14team One-Day Cup log with 10 points after two wins, two losses and one washed out match from five games.

Plaatjes added he believes his charges are well on track with their title defence despite the slow start.

“I think we are in good positions on both logs looking at the rest of the groups.

“We just need to pick up another couple of wins and force ourselves into the top five.

“The logs are very congested and if we keep playing good cricket we will be in the mix soon.”

After a flying start in the ThreeDay Challenge, Border slumped to their second defeat this season.

Plaatjes’ men are currently sixth on the log on 53 points with two wins, two losses and a draw.

In the low-scoring three-day clash, Border were skittled out for 171 in just 60 overs in the first innings thanks to fighting knocks from Nqolo (63) and tailender Lucky Phangabantu (24 not out). The pair put on 73 for the ninth wicket before coming back to dismiss the hosts for 148. Darryl Brown picked up five wickets to lead the attack in the first innings.

Border added 175 to their total in the first innings to set Griquas a fourth innings total of 199 for victory and they held out to win by a wicket.
