Bulldogs ‘need miracle’ to progress in Currie Cup

BORDER Bulldogs coach Andre Human admits that it will be a miracle if his charges make it to the Currie Cup First Division semifinals this season.

The East London side narrowly lost to Griffons on Saturday. Now they have a daunting task with a date away to the SWD Eagles on Friday.

Border though should draw solace from the fact Eagles also come from an away loss to the Falcons. But the encounter is likely to be tough as Eagles will be looking to redeem themselves in their own backyard.

Bulldogs are languishing at the bottom of the log with eight points after six losses and a single victory in seven games thus far. Their recent form has not been that bad after they managed a win over Falcons a fortnight ago before allowing Griffons to steal victory under their noses this past weekend.

“We had the opportunity to beat Griffons but it was just not to be.

“We scored four tries and managed a bonus point but the heat and high altitude in Welkom worked against us,” said Human.

“It is never easy to win up there but over and above that one or two mistakes towards the end cost us the game. I'm afraid it is now almost impossible for us to make the semis considering our next three games – two of which are away.”

After the clash third-placed Eagles who are also eager to cement their position in top four on Friday, Bulldogs will return home to host high-flying top of the log Leopards on September 20 before visiting Boland six days later.

On paper, it will be almost be impossible for Border to beat Leopards who have only tasted defeat once in the current season.

Boland though, are no better than the Bulldogs with poor results. They are just five points ahead of Border on position five with 13 points.

Human, who maintained that they were taking it one game at a time, believes that his team can beat any opponent on any given day.

“If we can play well for the whole game and minimise our mistake, we can win against any opposition,” Human said.

“We just also need to be more clinical with our finishing, but we are a decent side.

“My boys are positive because they know we have been playing well of late despite our position.” — mawandem@dispatch.co.za
