Weather delays Mandela Day upgrade

Bad weather has knocked out the planned 67 minutes Mandela Day renovation of Sinethemba High School in Mdantsane’s NU4 scheduled for today.

The event was set to coincide with the final weigh-in for tomorrow’s boxing tournament which will be held to celebrate the birthday of former president Nelson Mandela at the ICC on the East London beachfront.

Xaba Promotions and Events MD Ayanda Matiti said plans to improve the school have been postponed to next weekend.

“The bad weather would have hampered the work,” he said.

The weigh-in has now been moved to the fight venue and will be held this morning at 11am.

In the main bouts Mdantsane veteran Ali Funeka, 37, will risk his IBO welterweight crown against Limpopo’s Tsiko Mulovhedzi while Gauteng-based Gideon Buthelezi will attempt to regain his IBO junior bantamweight crown from reigning champion Lwandile Sityatha.

The weigh-in is expected to draw a full house, especially as it will be shown on SABCTV, marking the return of the national broadcaster to televising boxing in the region.

Tickets for the tournament are selling at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers for R150.

Matiti said about 70% of the tickets had been sold and there would be none sold at the event.

The tournament will be a box and dine event.
