Tigers reap stormy whirlwind

Tornado FC dismantled Future Tigers with a convincing 5-2 drubbing in an entertaining ABC Motsepe League East London derby at the Jan Smuts Stadium yesterday.

The Mdantsane side have now scored a staggering 14 goals in three successive matches.

As Thobela Bikwani, Tornado head coach had promised an attacking style of football a day before the match, he delivered on his promise with the five goals, three of which by man-of-the-match Thobile Mkhize who banged all three in the opening stanza.

Mkhize was clinical but so was the entire Tornado attacking force whose transition going forward was electric.

Tigers defence was chasing shadows and running like headless chickens for the better part of the game, especially their right-back Thabani Gasa with the aggressive Tornado front-line proving too hot to handle.

Tigers will need something radical if their porous defence is to improve any time soon as admitted by their coach Xolisa Zenzile.

An excited Bikwani post the match said: “Like I said before the game, we are an attacking side and we proved that once again.

“We are not 100% where we want to be yet but I can promise you many teams in this league are going to struggle to keep up with our intensity.”

Tornado controlled the game from the kick-off whistle with Mkhize scoring the opener 15 minutes into the match.

Gasa was the biggest culprit in the Tigers porous back-line as he just could not handle the skilful General Nkobongwane

Again the hosts were found wanting 10 minutes after the opening goal and the same Mkhize was back to haunt them with a second. From this point on, what was a one-sided affair in favour of the visitors subsided with Tigers charging forward strongly in search of closing the gap.

The hosts were lucky not to score when their out-of-form striker Unam “Nomvethe” Mancoba fired a thunderous shot that was denied by the cross bar.

As the saying goes, when you keep on knocking, the door will be opened and indeed Tigers were finally let in when their lanky forward Asanda Kupiso scored a bicycle-kick to make it 2-1. However, it was not raining but pouring for Tigers at the back as they were exposed again five minutes to the interval and Mkhize was there to take his hat-trick.

Tornado’s attack was just too much for the Motsepe League rookies Tigers whose defence brought down Lungelo Yekiso and referee Akhona Makalima ruled a penalty and Koena Matlala made no mistake.

Barely 15 minutes later Tornado skipper Yekiso fired home goal number five for the Mdantsane side.

Themba Mkhunqwana would get the second goal for the home side, but Tornado were already home and dry with three points and five goals.
