ALL FLAGGED OUT: Cyclists enjoy a well deserved rest at the end of last year’s K2K event
The ever popular Kwelera2Kei Mountain bike outride is back and ready to roll as cyclists will take on the route on Saturday.

The event is hosted by East London mountain bike club Funtrax.

Arguably one of East London’s biggest cycling events, the race is gearing up for its fourth running after first being cycled in 2012.

“About four years ago, four of us decided to ride out here as part of training and we rode a similar route to Morgan’s Bay and that is where the idea came from to have this ride, although we rode back the next day,” said Funtrax committee member Mark van der Vyver.

The ride has continued to grow year-on-year and over 500 mountain bikers are expected to take part in this year’s event.

The event is not a race, but a relaxed social ride from Crossways Village to Kei Mouth.

“There are those few riders who would like to be there before 10am, but for the majority it is a relaxed outing to enjoy the wonderful countryside,” said Van der Vyver.

There are no less than 16 local businesses setting up water points with snacks and refreshments, where everything from biscuits to braais will be served along the route.

The scenic 70km route meanders along district gravel roads and private farm roads, while the cyclists will also be passing through a traditional Xhosa village where they will be entertained by the local traditional choir.

“There are many races over the year and a lot of people ride just for the enjoyment and not to race so the idea was to cater for them with this event,” said Van der Vyver.

“The social aspect is really what it is all about. We want the guys to stop along the way at the different points and chat and relax before continuing on their way.”

There will also be a brunch stop at the halfway point along the Haga-Haga road for the riders to enjoy.

With the various companies lending their time and support it helps make the event a success, with gazebo’s along the way for the bikers to stop and chat under.

“Most of the companies involved are already involved in mountain biking and giving back to the community, and most are involved for their third or fourth year now,” said Van der Vyver.

The ride will get under way at Crossways Spar at 6am on Saturday morning, and the first mountain bikers to Kei Mouth could arrive by 10am.

The cutoff time for the riders is 2pm, while a few words will be said and a lucky draw held at 3pm.
