It’s all systems go for big varsity show

University cricket action takes centre-stage as the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Cricket B Week gets under way across East London today.

Everything is in place, with the teams having arrived yesterday and all will be going ahead this morning.

“We are all ready to go and we will be getting under way as planned,” said tournament director Deon Muller.

“Border is once again very proud to be hosting this great week of university cricket action.”

Seven teams will be taking part in this year’s watered down competition after a number of university sides were unable to attend due to the recent fees strikes prolonging exams.

Thus this year teams will be competing for the title of 2015 B week champion, however the winners will not have the chance of playing for promotion to the A week as in previous years.

“Although they will not have the usual promotion-relegation match to the A week this year I believe the teams will still be going all out to become 2015 champions,” said Muller.

“I am looking forward to the university’s playing some enjoyable and positive cricket over a full week of action.”

The Border’s premier team university team, Fort Hare, will be looking to make a statement having been relegated from the B section of last year’s A week.

They will thus want to put in a top performance in their home event and set them up for next year when they will be hunting promotion once again.

“For us as a university it is always nice to take part in these cricket weeks and we want to win as many games as we can,” said head of Fort Hare’s cricket academy Mfuneko Ngam.

“Most of our second team players will be taking part this week.

“I always encourage the guys when they compete in a cricket week to impress and show what they have got and I expect them to give a good account of themselves.”

The University of Zululand (Zululand), the University of Limpopo (Turfloop), the University of Venda (Venda), Mangosuthu University (MUT), Sefako Makgaku University (SMU) and Durban University of Technology (DUT) are the other six sides taking part in the week and they will all be aiming for good performances.

All matches in this year’s event will be played in the T20 format which will see six games a day being played, with the finals set for Friday.

The weather forecast is looking sketchy over the week and could play a part on some of the days.

“We will play it by the weather scenario,” said Muller.

“If we have to move some things around or change a venue we will deal with it when we get there.”

Today’s first day of action sees the first three games getting under way at 9am.

Fort Hare will play Zululand at Police Park, Venda will be up against SMU at Hams and Turfloop will take on MUT at Bohs.

The afternoon session will get going at 2pm with Turfloop playing Venda at Hams, Zululand against MUT at Police Park and Fort Hare taking on DUT at Bohs.
