Former Proteas cricket player Herschelle Gibbs did not appear for a drunken driving charge in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
A court official, who could not be named because she is not authorised to speak to the media, said Gibbs was out of the country.
A year ago, a report emerged that Gibbs had been arrested in Cape Town.
She said a subpoena would now be issued for him to appear in court on December 14.
Gibbs has been heard commentating on the ongoing Pakistan v England cricket series. It is understood that he was only expected to be back in the country early next month.
Western Cape police could not confirm his identity at the time of the arrest, but said a 40-year-old man was arrested following a car accident on November 30 last year. He was granted bail.
In 2009, Gibbs was treated at a rehabilitation clinic for drug and alcohol abuse.
He had been arrested in March 2008, apparently after an incident in Main Road, Sea Point in Cape Town and had faced a charge of drunken driving, alternatively reckless or negligent driving. The charges were withdrawn.
Gibbs and West Indies great Brian Lara will play for the Legends XI in a T20 match against Perth Scorchers on December 11. -News24
