IT is expected that Charl Crous and not Cheeky Watson will represent the Southern Kings when Saru hold a crisis meeting in Cape Town today to discuss the cash-strapped union’s future.

This may surprise some rugby fans who would have expected EP president Watson to attend the meeting ahead of the union's chief executive.

The meeting is expected to address a wide-range of issues as Saru race against time to get the Kings ready for their opening Super Rugby match against the Sharks on February 27.

Saru took control of the Kings last week after a cash crisis resulted in several players leaving the ailing franchise. This raised serious doubts about their ability to compete in Super Rugby. It has also emerged the Kings players and coaching staff are still waiting for their October salaries despite the Saru takeover last week.

The meeting will be the first step in attempting to transform the ailing Southern Kings into a combination capable of punching their weight in Super Rugby.

The operational implementation task group will oversee the running of the Kings. “We will be leaning heavily on EPRU personnel in this implementation process in due course and they are providing us with certain documentation to determine the current landscape at the franchise,” Saru CEO Jurie Roux said.

•Meanwhile, it’s reported versatile Kings back Hansie Graaff is back at Griffons after a two-year absence.
