Border hit the ground running

Border enjoyed an absolutely dominant day of cricket on the first day of their Sunfoil 3-day clash against Namibia at Buffalo Park yesterday.

Bad light and rain brought an early end to proceedings, two hours before the scheduled end of play, however with Border in such a good position they won’t be too troubled, unless the bad weather continues today.

Border ended the day on 103/2 in their first innings, a lead of 35 over Namibia after they bowled them all out for 68 just after lunch.

Thandolwethu Mnyaka led a superb Border bowling effort picking up 5/14 off seven overs as he decimated the top and middle-order of Namibia.

He was backed up well by Phaphama Fojela 3/4 off 7.2 overs and Yanda Pangabantu 2/19 off nine.

“I am happy with my haul. I had to put in the effort and work and managed to pick up some wickets,” said Mnyaka.

At close, opening batsman Gionne Koopman was unbeaten on 44 and captain Martin Walters on 21.

Tapelo Letsholo (14) was the first wicket to fall in Borders innings, bowled by Christiaan Snyman with Border on 22.

Kevin Bennett then hit a breezy 23 off 27 balls with three boundaries in a 38-run partnership with Koopman, but was caught behind by keeper Zane Green off the bowling of SJ Loftie-Eaton in the 16th over. Walters and Koopman then safely took Border to stumps.

In the morning session the Border won the toss and elected to field, with the call paying immediate dividends.

A decent looking first wicket partnership looked as if it had seen off the early danger, but in the 12th over Border strike bowler Fojela bowled Xander Pitchers (7) with Namibia on 19.

Three overs later and Green (2) became Mnyaka’s first scalp, trapped in front lbw.

In his next over Mnyaka claimed a double strike, bowling Michau du Preez (1) and then JP Kotze for a first ball duck off successive deliveries, reducing Namibia to 28/4.

Four overs later and Mnyaka sealed his five-wicket haul with another double strike, first removing innings top scorer Stephan Baard (17) lbw and then three balls later bowled Loftie Eaton for a third ball duck.

At 35/6 Namibia were in danger of not even making 50, however Lohan Louwrens and JJ Smit took them past that mark, with Louwrens then bowled for 11 by Pangabantu as they slipped to 54/7.

Smit and Christopher Coombe then took them to lunch on 67/7.

Coombe (12) knicked the first ball after lunch to keeper Letsholo off Pangabantu and the first two balls of the next over saw Smit (9) bowled by Fojela and Snyman then edged his first ball to Letsholo to end the innings in double quick time.

Fojela will now start the Namibian second innings on a hat-trick.
