Bidvest Wits became the first Premier Soccer League club to announce a new signing in the January transfer window as they snapped up English striker James Keene, who was on trial at Kaizer Chiefs last year.

Wits had kept one of the foreigner slots open for the second half of the season and Keene will possibly fill in a gap in attack for the club, who lost top place in the Absa Premiership standings to Mamelodi Sundown last month.

He arrives on a free transfer having played at relegated Halmstad in Sweden last year alongside ex-Chiefs winger Matthew Rusike

The 30-year-old journeyman striker has played twice in England’s Premier League but mostly in the lower leagues and also in India, Israel, Norway and Sweden.

Stuart Baxter tried to get Chiefs to sign Keene last year but management’s refusal was one of the reasons the relationship between coach and club soured and he left at the end of last season.

Keene has scored only six goals in the last three seasons.
