Options of the traditional Discovery Surfers from Kwelera Mouth or the shorter version from Gonubie, both finishing at Nahoon Beach, has many runners in a quandry as to which to opt for, but what it does mean is that they can race according to their strengths.

That is exactly what men’s winner of the long run did. Being a seasoned campaigner over longer and tougher terrains he took the race to the opposition early on and although challenged on occasion, Nkosinathi Nzingo was not going to let go of winning his first Surfers title.

The conditions were reasonable for running despite some rain making rocks more challenging than usual.

Nzingo, who runs for Municipal AC, recorded a winning time of 69:32. Second was Kaylem Coetzee of Old Selbornians and third Makaya Masumpa, Born 2 Run’s most experienced runner, who features in Surfers results every year and turns 50 in March.

Celebrity runner Shaun Meiklejohn ran another great race while Bruce Fordyce completed his 10th.

Myrette Brink (Filmalter), who now runs for KPMG made up her mind on Friday to run the longer race despite injury concerns and after a warm up jog with Hanlie Botha at the King Williams Town parkrun launch in the morning, came storming through to win for the third time.

Jessica Pollock for whom Surfers offers much nostalgia was a darkhorse entry this year but she showed the mettle that once made her a teenage winner in a woman’s race.

Looking strong at the finish Pollock came in second in UCT colours in 83:06.

Andrea Ranger of Old Selbornians finished third.

The paddlers revelled in the conditions and the finish was enjoyed by spectators given a dramatic backdrop.

Brendon Thompson and Andrew Carter continued their domination of the double ski race finishing in 65:49 which was 1:47 ahead of second-placed Chris Batting and Duncan Boyd.

Likewise Stevie Woods was again too strong for the singles field with a 67:39 win.

Hennie Roos, like Masumpa, continues to defy age barriers to finish second.

The 10km plus race was a triumph for woman power with Born 2 Run star Botha beating the entire field to the finish.

Second in and first man was Cuan Coetzee, brother of the runner-up of the main race.

Next came 18 year old Luxolo Shushu of Born 2 Run who has recently emerged from the traditional “bush” period.

Third in the men’s race was Sibongo Mnyaka.

After Botha the women’s race was made up of three Born 2 Run members in Caryn Lategan, Jenni Petersen and Stephanie Smith.
