The magnitude of the boxing tournament scheduled to be held at Orient Theatre has prompted SABC-TV to make an about-turn and bring its cameras to the city.

The gigantic show will see five mouthwatering title bouts topped by a highly anticipated clash between evenly-matched Toto Helebe and Bongani Mahlangu for the WBA Pan-African junior-featherweight title.

Helebe hails from Cape Town but has been regularly fighting in the city to build a fan-base.

Mahlangu is from Johannesburg but like Helebe he has made East London his second home as his career is guided by local promoter Xaba Promotions and Events.

Other bouts on the card involve an opportunity by wild swinging Mdantsane hero Vusumzi “Boko Haram” Bokolo taking on veteran Qumbu-born Cape Town-based Mzonke Fana for the SA lightweight crown.

Bokolo will be getting at a national shot for the first and probably last time

Daluxolo Mancotywa makes the maiden defence of his SA mini-flyweight crown against Thembelani Okolo while Thembelani Nxoshe and Sithembiso Faye will finally get an opportunity to become legitimate national champions if they get past Mfundo Gwayana and Lindile Tshemese with SA flyweight and junior-bantamweight belts at stake.

Presented by Andile Bakubaku’s Champions Promotion in association with XPE, the tournament was initially blacked out by the national broadcaster.

However, when it was submitted again after being given the green light by Boxing SA, SABC-TV jumped in to screen it.

Bakubaku confirmed that a deal has been reached to beam the event live on SABC2 at 9pm.

“We are happy to announce that SABC-TV has since agreed to televise it and this decision will motivate the boxers to double their efforts knowing that the whole country is watching them,” he said.
