Four Border school stars in training with SA U19 squad

Four Border schools cricket stars have been selected to the South African U19 training squad who will gather at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria in May.

The four-day camp will take place from May 5-8 and will be used to select a South African U19 team that will tour Sri Lanka in June and July.

A further three Eastern Cape players were named, all from the Eastern Province cricket union, with Jade de Klerk, Kenan Smith and Lutho Sipamla included, giving the training squad a strong local flavour.

Of the four Border players, Krweqe, Niemand and Raubenheimer played in the U17 cricket week in December last year and then played for the SA U17 Invitational team at at the Cubs week earlier this year in January.

Mnyaka played for the Border U19 team at the Coke week and then the Warriors cub side at the Cubs week.

Mnyaka’s best performances over those two tournaments saw him pick up 2/36 against Easterns for Border and 3/60 against the SA U19 team for the Warriors Cubs.

Raubenheimer’s top performances for the Border U17 and SA Invitational team included picking up 4/13 against KwaZulu-Natal and 2/54 against Mpumalanga for Border, while for the SA U17’s he picked up 2/32 and 2/59 against the Knights and Lions Cubs respectively.

Krweqe’s best showing saw him pick up 2/11 and 1/13 for Border against North West and Limpopo, while for the SA U17s he picked up 2/46 against the Cobras Cubs.

For Niemand he shone mostly with the bat, scoring 68no, 52 and 46no for Border against North West, Free State and KZN respectively, but also chipped in with the ball, claiming 2/26 against Mpumalanga.

For the SA U17 team his standout performances were 64 and 59 with the bat against the Knights and Cobras Cubs, while he also claimed 2/17 and 2/55 with the ball against the Knights and Lions Cubs.

“I think our guys do have a good chance and if any of them gets selected for the SA touring team it will be a great bonus for the player and Border cricket as a whole,” said Muller.
