Selborne old boy to coach EP Academy: Top job thrills highly skilled Nomlomo

Rising local rugby coach Phiwe Nomlomo is moving onto the next level as he begins his stint as head coach of the Eastern Province Kings Academy in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

It is a big step up for Nomlomo who has coached at school and junior provincial level in the past. He will now be in charge of ushering in the next generation of rugby stars.

“I think this is the correct step in the right direction for me now. There are still quite a few things I would like to achieve and I believe this will help me get there one day,” said Nomlomo.

It is a very exciting opportunity for Nomlomo who has clearly been on the SA Rugby Unions (Saru) radar. They have now employed him on a renewable contract as they look to improve the current situation at the Kings.

Having matriculated in 2004, Nomlomo was contracted to the Sharks for three years where he did a marketing degree while playing rugby for their U19 and U21 teams.

Having always been interested in coaching Nomlomo started getting his qualifications straight out of school.

“I always had a passion for coaching and I did my Saru level coaching when I was up at the Sharks and when it changed to IRB and world rugby I did that when I was back at Selborne,” said Nomlomo.

After his contract at the Sharks was up Nomlomo returned to East London where he represented the Border Bulldogs for a number of seasons playing Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and Sevens, before being offered the opportunity to return to Selborne in 2010 as a teacher, beginning his coaching career.

While at Selborne Nomlomo worked his way up to be joint coach of the successful Selborne First rugby team, while also coaching at the Grant Khomo and Craven Week junior rugby festivals each year.

He will be missed by Selborne.

“We at Selborne are extremely proud of Phiwe’s achievement,” said Selborne College principal Andrew Dewar. “I believe that Saru have found a gem, a true gentleman, a man of respect, and a dedicated employee.”
