Border stars in line for top honours

The best cricketers from across the Border region are set to be recognised as the 2015/2016 season draws to a close with the Border Cricket Awards dinner at Buffalo Park tonight.

All facets of Border cricket – from the women to the semi-pro team – will be rewarded for the achievements over the season.

The glittering event is seen as a very important night on the calendar and some senior officials from the Border and Eastern Cape will be in attendance.

“It is a very important night for everyone involved at Border as it rewards everyone who has made very positive contributions towards the union over the season and it is especially important for the players as even if the team did not perform that well, players who have done exceptionally well deserve to be recognised,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

The most eagerly anticipated awards will most likely be the semi-pro awards which will see the Border players rewarded for their stellar performances over the year.

Last season Phaphama Fojela was the toast of the team as he was named the Border Player of the season and Border Bowler of the season, while the other major award went to Marco Marais who was named Batsman of the season.

This season Fojela has again been in superb form and finds himself nominated in the player and bowler of the season categories again.

Other top performers in the form of Border stand-in captain Martin Walters and experienced allrounder Darryl Brown who are also in the running to pick up major awards with both nominated in the player and batsman of the season categories.

Last year Walters was nominated in both the batsman and player of the season divisions, while Brown was nominated in the bowler of the season, and with both not picking up one of the awards, they will want to claim an award this time round.

Other players who are also in the running are Thandolwethu Mnyaka and Sinovuyo Ntuntwana in the Bowler of the season category and Gionne Koopman in the Batsman of the season category.

“A big positive about these awards is that it inspires the younger players, when they see the senior players being rewarded for their hard work and effort over the season; it makes them want to do their best as well,” said Plaatjes.

Other major categories to be awarded on the night include the Border women cricket awards which will also be very interesting, while the often unsung contributors – the Umpire and Scorer of the season – will also be recognised.

Players who received their South African colours over the season will also be noted, while the already finished club season and rural provincial season will see the respective winners and top performers receive their awards.

On the club side Old Selbornians Cricket Club who claimed the league and T20 double this year will be receiving their trophies and medals.
