Bucks bolster ranks to avoid relegation

NFD side Mthatha Bucks have roped in former Bafana Bafana forward Petrus Ngebo (previously known as Petrus Mahlatsi) to bolster their attack as the battle to avoid relegation reaches boiling point.

The Mthatha outfit completed the signing of the 33-year-old this week but added ex-Chippa United winger Philani Dlamini to their books.

Club COO Lunga Tukute was optimistic that the experience the duo come with will solve the side’s problems upfront where they have been firing blanks until last weekend’s 3-0 thumping of Milano United.

The two additions’ contracts expire the end of June, same as all the players in the club’s books.

Ngebo, also a former Bloemfontein Celtic striker, joins two ex-PSL veterans in the Bucks frontline – David Radebe and Moses Spandeel.

The club will now pin their hopes on the well travelled trio to bang the goals in during the all-important six remaining matches Bucks cannot afford to lose if they are to avoid the chop.

“Everyone knows what has been a long-standing problem in the team – lack of goals – so we need to reinforce,” said Tukute.

“The inclusion of Ngebo who joins other experienced forwards will give us a major boost.

“At times like these when you are fighting against relegation and the season is drawing to a close, pressure tends to mount and experienced players who can handle the pressure are needed.”

Ngebo, a seasoned good finisher, may be retained to be the base on which the club may build on for next season.

When asked what prompted the club to rope in Ngebo, a free agent who was dumped by his previous employer, Royal Eagles, Tukute said: “The fact that he did not succeed there does not necessarily mean he will not here so we felt that he has a role to play in our club.”

Dlamini, 24, will add some spark to Amathol’amnyama’s wing attack, positions that are currently flooded by inexperienced U 23s.

According to Tukute, Dlamini was looking sharp at training.

However, Tukute said Ngebo needed some work to get him on par with the rest of the other players.

“His situation is not bad because within a week or so I believe he will be on par with everyone else.”

The duo will be hoping to get some game time when the club travels to Limpopo on Sunday to lock horns with Black Leopards.

Bucks, 14th on the log standings, having scored just 18 goals thus far in the season – the second worst offensive record – will need Ngebo and Dlamini to come to the party fast.
