The Border Bulldogs unprecedented good run they have shown thus far in the Currie Cup season is no fluke.
This according to their skipper Siya Mdaka, who promised that they will prove so, by raking in their fourth successive victory when they lock horns with Pumas at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London at 2.30pm this afternoon.
Mdaka says his troops are ready for a highly physical confrontation against the struggling Pumas who will be out for blood having lost two times already in three outings.
The expected physicality even convinced the Bulldogs technical staff to sacrifice Athi Manentsa for the gigantic Lukhanyo Nomzanga who comes in at left flank.
The Mpumalanga visitors will surely meet a meaner and determined Bulldogs side ready for the brawl.
“It is going to be a physical game if what we saw of them (Pumas) in their previous matches is anything to go by,” predicted Mdaka.
“They are a side that comes more direct and we expect their forwards to come at us with everything they have but I trust my boys, we will be ready for them.”
The 28-year-old Mdaka said the home side expected the travelling team to attack using drives emanating from lineouts and by bullying them at the scrums.
However, Border had worked hard to improve their play in these two areas.
“As such, we know that if we dominate in these areas, they will have no Plan B.”
If and when Bulldogs manage to achieve this, they will be banking on their evasive backs to lead them to victory.
More importantly though will be how consistent the home side become throughout the match.
Mdaka vowed they will stand their ground and be in the opposition’s face for 80 minutes. Something that has proved difficult for Border in previous outings where they are in control for either the first or closing stanza.
The Mthatha-born right-flanker believes Bulldogs are too focused to drop their guard when it matters the most as they march towards achieving a five-match winning streak.
“The good results everyone have seen were not a fluke but something we have worked hard for during off season, therefore we are not surprised,” he said.
“We remain humble with our feet on the ground and we will forever strive to be a better team, even when we are winning.”
Currently third on the 15-team log-standings with an unblemished record from three matches, Border will be out to tighten the screws and cement their place at the top end.
However, by virtue of their position, which was unexpected to naysayers, most opponents are out to dismantle the East London-based provincial team. Mdaka said Bulldogs were ready to take the heat, adding that all that matters for now is to win, even without bonus points.
