Chippa to outwit Clever Boys

Chippa United will be looking to continue with their winning ways when they play Premier Soccer League contenders Bidvest Wits today in a league fixture at Bidvest Stadium (kick-off 6pm).

Both sides will go into the game oozing confidence after their respective wins during the week.

The Port Elizabeth-based side hammered Platinum Stars 4-1 on Wednesday, while Wits beat SuperSport United 2-0 on Tuesday.

Though confidence levels will be on a high, today’s encounter will not be an easy one as both teams are in desperate need of the three points.

The Clever Boys are chasing for the league title and Chippa are fighting to cement their position in the top eight. The Bay side are seventh on the log, with 37 points from 26 matches.

With only four more games left before the league comes to an end, the Chilli Boys know they need to keep on winning if they want to achieve their mandate this season.

Having said that, Chippa coach Dan “Dance” Malesela is confident that his troops will be able to rise to the occasion.

After their win against Dikwena, the former Orlando Pirates skipper said his players needed to tone down a little as they had to do a lot of running.

Malesela said the Clever Boys’ style of play was not that different from theirs.

“I had a chance to see Wits . A very difficult team, but I think we almost play similar styles of football, although there is a bit of a variation with theirs,” he said.

“We just have to see how we go forward and start creating the chances again.”

Since 2012-13 Chippa and Wits have met in five league games. The Johannesburg side have a clean unbeaten sheet at home against the Chilli Boys. When the sides met earlier in the season, Wits beat Chippa 3-1 at Nelson Mandela Bay.
