Big drive to relaunch Buffalo Flats sports council

An attempt to relaunch the Buffalo Flats Sports Council will be tabled at a meeting between the sports clubs and organisations within Buffalo Flats tonight.

The idea behind the relaunch is to once again unite sport in Buffalo Flats under one banner so that they can all be united in their cause to improve sport in the area.

“The main objective of the re-launch of the Buffalo Flats Sports Council (BFSC) is to develop a high performance culture in sport and sports administration for the benefit of the sporting fraternity,” said current interim chairman Wendell van der Westhuizen.

“We want sports in the greater Buffalo Flats area to talk with one voice when it comes to sports development and upgrading of sports facilities while also creating a coordinated landscape whereby all sports bodies and clubs can access sports facilities in our area.”

Having these sport councils is of integral importance to improving sport in the various areas of the city, according to Buffalo City Sport Council president Xolani Bishoti.

“Having these sport councils is very important in keeping sport in the region running smoothly,” said Bishoti.

“We have various sport councils across the region, including in King William’s Town, Dimbaza, Mdantsane, Duncan Village, and Buffalo Flats is reviving theirs. We have about 14 in total at the moment.

“The different areas have different challenges and it is up to them to work together to find out what their most pressing issues are.

“When a particular code wants assistance they will approach their local sports council and when they have approved it they will then approach us and we will on their behalf talk to the institutions that can help in the situation.”

Buffalo Flats are eager to get their council up and running once again after it has laid dormant for some time, and they look forward to being proactive once again.

“We would like to speak with one voice and look at developmental issues and create a sports friendly environment whereby our sportsmen and women can thrive,” said Van der Westhuizen.

“We currently have a problem whereby BCM do not want to talk to an individual sports club but would rather talk to a sports council when it comes to upgrading of sports fields and funding opportunity for sports events.

“We want to ensure close co-operation with both the Buffalo City sports council and the Eastern Cape sports council and then ultimately Sascoc.”

Today’s meeting will thus be integral in putting the correct procedures in place to ensure the council is back up and running and operating fully in the area once again.

“The purpose of Thursday’s meeting is to pave a way forward for a nomination process for possible office-bearers and to create a vision, mission and objective in line with the current constitution of BFSC,” explained Van der Westhuizen.

“I would like to urge all sports clubs and organisations within Buffalo Flats to attend the meeting which will be held at the Alfred Schoeman Cricket club, starting at 6pm.”

For Bishoti the importance of the sport councils reaching their goals and improving sport in the region cannot be understated, and he is excited at the prospect of adding more councils to other areas that need assistance.

“Our mandate is to make sure that we promote and advance all sporting codes at our level that support the national plan as well as acting as a body that can try and solve various problems,” said Bishoti.

“We want to encourage co-operation and collaboration among all roleplayers of sport in the area so as to help sport development.”
