Top drivers solidify championship leads

Karting action was in full flow over the past weekend as round three of the Border Karting Club and Regional Championship was held at the East London Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday.

Championship leaders began to solidify their leads while some intriguing results were had by other competitors.

“The racing action on the day was quite spectacular. The DD2 class in particular was an extremely close affair with five drivers lining up nose to tail at times,” said Border Karting’s Jethro Schwartz.

“The clubman’s classes, which are all on track at the same time also proved to be one to watch with some bumper bashing and some spectacular passing manoeuvres.”

The 50cc cadet class saw defending champ and current leader, Kaylim Padayachee extend his lead in the season standings with a superb performance to take the overall victory for the day, with Port Elizabeth’s Bryce Loenen the only one able to stop Padayachee from taking a clean sweep of victories by claiming the win in the final heat to finish second overall.

Red Scholtz then took third place while current second-placed driver in the championship, Jordan van der Merwe and Dylan Stevens finished tied fourth.

The 60cc junior class belonged to Port Elizabeth’s Aiden Barnard whose consistent performances saw him secure victory ahead of 2015 Border champion Sebastian Smith, while Jordan Dorning finished third.

In the clubman’s A class, Border’s top national competitor, Shannon Jackson, was top of the pops as he claimed a full house of points on the day, while Port Elizabeth’s Cameron Kelly came in second followed by championship leader Jared de Kock in third.

Port Elizabeth’s Kean Barnard then dominated Clubman’s B as he matched the pace of the top class A competitors throughout the day.

Second place went to Craig Borges while defending champion Ashton Nell finished third.

Defending clubman’s C champ Cuan Flusk was pressed hard by a charging Cherne Marais, but claimed the win in the end ahead of Cherne with her sister, Melandre, taking third overall.

Reigning DD2 champ Geoff Stephen was in a class of his own as he managed a dominant victory. Shaun Gradwell, who shadowed Stephen all day, had to settle for second with Craig Borges finishing third.

With the championship set to head into the second half of the season soon, things should be heating up as drivers check their position on the log.

“The championships battles are now well set up and there is a clear indication of who is fighting who in the standings,” admitted Schwartz.

“It’s going to be interesting to see who will come out on top as the 2016 champion on each class.”

The next round of the championship will be held at the Grand Prix track on June 25.
