Hudson Park are giant-killers – yet again

Exciting schools action was battled out across the Border over the last weekend of derby clashes before the winter school break.

Some entertaining games were on show, but two big results stood out from the rest.

Hudson Park were in mighty form again as they felled another giant in their impressive rugby season to date, when they made history by beating St Andrew’s College.

The 16-14 win was the second match in a row in which they rewrote the history books, after they picked up a first-ever win against Queen’s College two weeks ago, and then repeated the feat against St Andrew’s.

“It is the first time we have ever beaten them and it was a great effort from the guys,” Hudson first team coach Charles Howe said.

“The guys have been showing signs of improvement every match and they are going in the right direction.”

It was not smooth sailing for Hudson, however, as they trailed 7-3 at the break, but a concerted push in the second half allowed them to storm back and take the lead to claim a solid win.

“At halftime the guys knew that they hadn’t been giving everything and would need a bigger effort in the second half, so they went out and fixed a few errors that had hampered them in the first half and came back to take the win,” said Howe.

This result was Hudson’s 10th win of the season, against just four losses, and their fourth win in a row, showing that the team is building up a good head of steam.

However, they only have one match left before the break – against Port Rex on Monday next week – and they will want to go into the holidays on a high.

“Our success shows that what we are doing is working and things are looking up,” said Howe.

“Moving forward, we just have to keep our feet on the ground, taking it one game at a time and keep improving.”

Another big result saw Dale College thump Cambridge High School 69-0 in their school derby match-up.

It means Dale head into the break with a fantastic win record to date, proving that they are the best team on the Border so far this year.

With 14 wins, just one loss and a winning streak of 10 matches since early April, Dale have been unstoppable and defeating their biggest rivals in Selborne, Queen’s and Grey High have made it all the more impressive.

After the holidays Dale face Selborne and Queen’s for a second time each this season, as well as matches against St Andrews and Hudson, and it will be interesting to see if they can pick up where they left off and finish what has already been a great season in style.

The only other local side in action on the weekend was Grens, who went down 8-21 to Kingswood College.

Grens had won two games on the trot and were gaining some good momentum, but Kingswood have enjoyed a top season and once again proved their worth with a good win.

The derby meet between Stirling and Queen’s was postponed after last Friday’s taxi strike meant teams couldn’t travel to Queenstown on Friday.
