Tornado dream of an NFD place blown out of the water

Eastern Cape's dream of a second team in the National First Division came thudding to earth  today after Mdantsane Tornado FC's dismal showing at the national playoffs.

The East London club suffered a 1-0 defeat to Orbit College today having lost their opener against Steenberg United on Monday and played to a 1-1  draw against Apollo 11 yesterday.

Tornado will now play their final match on Friday against Kings United of KwaZulu-Natal.

But the match will be academic for the Eastern Cape  champions because even if they win, it will not be enough to resuscitate their chances for promotion to NFD.

Tornado have got no one but themselves to blame for their failed bid.

They failed to repeat what Mthatha Bucks did last year in this very competition when they campaigned successfully all the way to the NFD.

For Tornado, it was a completely different story. They dominated the first two matches, but the players body language in today's loss was telling as many individuals gave the impression of disinterest.

They will have to go back to the drawing board and hope to try again next year, if they win the provincial championship which is the only ticket to the national playoffs.

For now, Tornado have let down the football loving fans in  the Eastern Cape and it remains to be seen what their plans are going forward.
