THE Border U13 rugby team is hard at work gearing up for the coming U13 rugby week scheduled for Paarl from July 4 to 8.

The team, which is made up of the best players on the Border in the age group, will be aiming to progress as far as they can at the festival.

The young ones recently received a visit from two Border rugby stars, Blake Kyd and Johannes Jonker, who put the forwards through a number of drills to help them prepare.

“It is great to have Blake and Johan-nes come in and give the players some tips and put the forwards through some drills,” said Border U13 coach Eric Humpel.

The team is heading into the final stages of its preparations and next week the team will hold its last few sessions before the festival, with a two-day training camp at Port Rex before heading off to Paarl in the Western Cape on Saturday.

“The more the guys play together and the more they practice and get to know each other, the better we are getting, so I am happy,” said Humpel.

“We have a good side, a nice and competitive side. We are balanced with a skilful back line, have good pace out wide and a strong mobile pack, so we are covered in all areas.”

The team has played a few warm-up games since being chosen and will use those experiences to ensure they will be fully prepared for the big occasion.

“Since the team was formed we had two training sessions before we played two games against the Sharks and the Cheetahs U13 sides, which were tough games that we lost but we then had a good win against the Border Country Districts side,” said Humpel.

“Things are looking good but there are just a few things we need to work at like getting good front foot ball, because we have a really exciting back line.”

First up at the week for Border will be a match against the Limpopo Blue Bulls, which will be a tough test to start off with.

“The most important thing for us is to get a good start at the week,” said Humpel.

“We have the Limpopo Blue Bulls first and I hear they also have a good side this year, so it will be a tough match. At the end of the day the goal is to get to the final,” added Humpel.

“Two years ago we got to the final against Western Province, so it would be nice to get to the final again and give the boys an opportunity to play in that match.”
