Exciting rugby action took place across East London yesterday as the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Rugby Week kicked off.

Some interesting matchups were witnessed as teams went all out to win and make a good start to the week.

Rhodes University got their week of to a solid start with a good 26-12 win over the University of Limpopo. Rhodes ran in four tries, but missed all of their conversions, which could be a problem in closer games, but two penalties added to the score gave them a comfortable win.

Rhodes is one of the teams pushing for promotion to the Varsity Shield competition from the C division and they will want to build on this performance.

The A division also saw a number of big clashes take part.

The University of Stellenbosch claimed a nail-biting 31-29 win over the University of Free State in a very close battle.

Despite both teams’ kickers missing a couple of kicks each it was Maties’ five tries to Shimlas four that made the difference in the end.

Defending A division rugby week champs, the University of Johannesburg got their week off to a cracking start with a powerful 47-12 thumping of the University of Cape Town. It was a loud statement of intent from UJ and they will be gunning to retain their title.

A host of other matches were fought out across the divisions on the day with some exciting results and also a couple of walkovers.
