‘Dance’ seeks to be man for all seasons at Chippa

Chippa United coach Dan “Dance” Malesela has reaffirmed his commitment to the Port Elizabeth-based club despite being tempted with offers from other Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs.

Malesela signed a three-year contract with the Chilli Boys late last season and has vowed to stay with the club until that expires – and stay longer if required.

Malesela’s job with Chippa is his first stint as head coach in the PSL. Having spent most of his time coaching in the National First Division, the former Orlando Pirates captain has had an impressive run with Chippa.

The Chilli Boys finished in sixth place on the log last season, thereby booking themselves a spot in the lucrative MTN 8 competition.

Malesela says it would be too early for him to leave Chippa as he feels he has not achieved much with the team.

“Yes, I had a number of offers from clubs, but I think it will be too premature for me to start getting excited. I haven’t achieved a lot here at the club,” he said.

The former Cape Town All Stars coach said a top-eight finish was just a start – and showedwhat the Chilli Boys were capable of achieving in the future. “You get to position six on the log and you throw a big party and say ‘now I am happy’. I mean, really, what about number one and number two?

“So there aren’t any big achievements. It’s just a start of something that we need to build on,” said Malesela.

Malesela, who also played as a defender for Mamelodi Sundowns, has two more seasons remaining on his contract with the Chilli Boys, during which time he plans to achieve greater things.

“I still have two more seasons here, I want to use those seasons to achieve things with this club. I may ending up wanting to stay here longer than anticipated. I may end up buying property here who knows,” he said.

Securing silverware for the club is top of his list. “I want to win trophies, I want to empower players. I want players to progress to bigger heights,” said Malesela.

“I want to see some players being wanted by overseas clubs not only from the big teams. I want to see them one-day going to Europe, without having gone there via certain so-called big clubs.

“I want them to come from here and go straight to those teams. I want to see this club being recognised.

“I want people to want to watch Chippa United. I want to have this club get supported from outside this province.

“I want to change the minds of other people as well those who are staying in the Eastern Cape,” the coach added.
