Fighters to do it for Madiba

It is all systems go for the third edition of the Nelson Mandela boxing day when four titles will be contested at Selborne Park on Friday.

Presented by Xaba Promotions and Events (XPE) and shown live on SABCTV, the tournament promises to live up to expectations in line with the previous events celebrating the birthday of the late struggle icon.

XPE boss Ayanda Matiti said he decided to organise the show at the tennis court after the unavailability of the International Convention Centre (ICC).

“We will reconstruct the Selborne tennis court to meet our requirements,” he said.

The tournament was initially scheduled to be held on July 22 but was moved to Friday this week due to technical glitches.

Matiti stated that all the boxers are ready to stake their claims for various titles.

The event will see the IBF Youth title being contested in the region for the first time when recently crowned SA junior lightweight champion Aphiwe Mboyiya vies for the crown against Filipino Jerry Castroverde.

Mboyiya is fresh from his upset win over Jasper Seroka to lift the national crown just last month.

Commanding a lofty rating in the WBO, the 23-year-old Mboyiya is being steered towards a fully-fledged world title.

Also in action will be Makazole Tete battling against another Filipino, Raymond Tabugon, for the vacant IBF Intercontinental junior bantamweight crown.

Tete is on the rebound for world honours after he was beaten by Gideon Buthelezi for the IBO crown in his only single loss.

The eagerly-anticipated clash between Daluxolo Mangcontywa and Siphamandla Baleni will finally happen with the former’s SA mini-flyweight belt up for grabs.

The bout has been on the cards for a while after Mangcotywa upstaged Baleni and got the nod to fight for the title first, beating Lonwabo Roboshi of Port Elizabeth.

Baleni’s previous management refused to let its boxers contest for national titles, thus putting a stumbling block on the Mangcotywa clash.

But since the Mthatha-born boxer relocated to Mdantsane to join Makwedinana Matiti’s stable the fight has now come to fruition.

The fourth title fight will see Athi Dumezweni from Mthatha taking on Namibian Abmerk Shindjuu for the WBO Africa junior bantamweight crown.

There will be two preliminary bouts involving Olympian Siphiwe Lusizi. — DDR
