Funeka proves he’s still got it

Mdantsane veteran Ali Funeka continued with his good form of late when he scored a third round stoppage over Ghanaian Justice Addy at Queenstown Indoor Arena yesterday.

With his win Funeka retained the WBO Africa welterweight title.

The 38-year-old did not show any signs of succumbing to Father Time as he peppered the visitor with stinging shots.

Funeka upped his onslaught in the third round forcing the stoppage.

On the same bill Balemo Weliya, by way of DRC, surrendered his SA super middleweight crown when he was stopped in 11 rounds by Lee Dyer.

Dyer dished out a systematic beating until the brutality was halted one round before the end of the scheduled 12 rounds

Reigning South African flyweight champion Noxolo Makhanavu retained her title when she beat Siphosethu Nxazonke on a technical decision.

The bout, the only one involving female boxers, was stopped due to the cut Makhanavu suffered in the eighth round.

Scores were tallied with Makhanavu prevailing 80-72, 79-74 and 79-74.

Speaking after the fight, Makhanavu said she had prepared well for her opponent.

“What made me more determined is the fact that she had a lot to say before this fight. I knew I had to show her who the boss is,” she said.

Thembelani Nxoshe rebounded to winning ways after he scored a third-round stoppage over Xolani Radi in their flyweight fight.

The bout was stopped when Radi’s corner pulled him out due to nose bleeding.

Xolisa Magusha brought the Chris Hani District fans some delight when he won by a TKO in the second round against Thandolwethu Nkwenetini of Ndevena.

Odwa Gaxa of East London retained his Eastern Cape featherweight title when he destroyed Masande Mendile in 15 seconds.

In another clash, Duncan Village boxer Luyolo Magenuka also needed one round to pulverise Siyabulela Mfene in their welterweight clash.

Thulani Mtiya suffered a shoulder injury forcing his flyweight bout against Nkosikhona Speelman to be called off in the first round.

Speelman was awarded a technical knockout victory.
