Runners make light of winter conditions

The naming of the Winter Wonderland Festival and the road race derivative thereof certainly brought on some of the iciest weather of the East London winter to date.

Runners nonetheless turned out to test themselves over an interesting, if tough 12km course and for some a speedier 4km run.

It was certainly a day to remember for local club All Stars, who through the efforts of Mcebisi Yose had captured the Washie title in the morning and then some great running by Bulelani Mgubo took the Winter Wonderland race.

Mgubo who will be running for Border in the SA Half Marathon Championships at the weekend, made light of the hills to fend off a double-edged challenge from Nedbank’s Siyabulela Madlavana and Nkosinathi Nzingo. The first three times were 43:01, 43:21 and 43:45.

The first junior runner home, not for the first time, was Lithobe Menzeleleli from Real Gijimas.

He was also sixth overall with a time of 45:07, while Luxolo Shushu of Born 2 Run followed him in 50:04.

The first sub veteran to finish was independent runner Chumisa Nkanjeni in 50:27, the first veteran was Madlavana followed by Xolile Mashicila from Overtakers in 47:02. The first master home was Makaya Masumpa in 48:19 and he was followed by his Born 2 Run club mate Simon Ngxeke in 53:10.

The women’s race had two of the three member Border team taking part and Andrea Ranger of Old Selbornians used the opportunity to win the inaugural title. She won in 53:33 with Caryn Lategan of Born 2 Run second in 55:08.

Zandile Rubushe of Mdantsane AC was third in 57:00 followed by Warrior exponent, Jaime Griffiths of Born 2 Run and Lindy Vermeulen of Old Melbournians.

The age group races fell to Charlene Collins (Oxford Striders) in the sub vets, the veterans to Lynda Saunders and masters to Vee Jones, both from Born 2 Run and the grandmasters to Michelle Whittington also from Old Melbournians.
