Bok legends in town to raise funds and share thoughts on oval game

By ROSS ROCHE

Rugby aficionados will be gearing up for another night of interesting rugby discourse when Joost van der Westhuizen, Gary Teichmann, Andre Joubert and Mark Andrews appear at Hoërskool Grens tomorrow night.

The former Springbok stars will be speaking at the event hosted by the school in conjunction with Joost Events and is held as part of a joint fundraiser to raise much needed funds for both organisations.

This has become an annual event on the Grens calendar, with them bringing down a sporting legend each year to give their insights on their respective sport.

“We do this once a year. We have brought down Pat Symcox, Dick Muir, Toks van der Linde, Cobus Wiese, Nick Mallet, Corne Krige and many others so far, and it is always an enjoyable occasion,” said event organiser Andre Schoombee.

“This year we decided to get together with Joost and the J9 Foundation, of which not many people know that the J9 foundation does not give Joost any financial support, so he does not benefit from it, showing what a fantastic cause it is. It was one of the reasons we partnered up with them.”

The night comes at a great time for debate in SA rugby with the Super Rugby competition winding down to its end and the naming of the Bok team for the rugby championship just around the corner.

Also of great interest will be that Teichmann recently took over as CEO of the Sharks and that will be a topic still on people’s lips.

“The night is going to be very topical and because it is ex-players they will be able to give their take on the modern game and they will be talking very freely on a whole host of topics,” said Schoombee.

“With the incoming tour having just finished and the Rugby Championship coming up, there will be a lot to talk about.

“It is really entertaining and will be an enjoyable night for all.”

The initiative is essentially a joint fundraiser with Joost Events and Hoërskool Grens, with the proceeds being shared between them.

As with similar past events, guests will chat about their rugby experiences over the years, both on and off the field.

There will be a Q & A session as well as a three-course meal.

There will also be a cash bar.

As has become tradition, the dinner will be followed by an auction of highly sought-after sporting memorabilia to raise funds.

The response has always been good so far, and this time around the event is already almost sold out.

“There are still a few single seats available and those should fill up any minute, so anyone interested should get hold of us soon,” said Schoombee.

lIf you are interested in claiming one of the final seats for what promises to be a great night of rugby banter, call Garth on 072-225-7023, or e-mail Andre on andres@schoombee.co.za.
