Adventure racing fans and competitors are gearing up for the annual Lilyfontein Adventure Race in just over a month.

Entries are open for the race, and teams will have to work hard to get themselves ready for another tough test of mind and body.

After last year’s race at Arena Resort, it returns to Lilyfontein School, where it was held at the school a couple of years ago.

“We are returning to Lilyfontein School but participants need not fear, all of the routes will be different from previous events,” event organiser Margaret Mitchell said.

“Our local landowners are buying into our philosophy and opening up their farms for our activities.

“They trust that we know what we are doing and that we will not abuse the privilege.

“This event will be different from all previous events in that the routes will provide their own obstacles.

“If you want to know what that means, then you’ll need to join us here in September,” Mitchell said.

This is the race’s 16th edition and the multi-disciplined event, which features teams of two or four people, attracts around 400 participants from age seven up to 70 every year.

“The objective of the adventure race is to expose children and adults to the benefits of healthy outdoor activities,” Mitchell said.

“We provide an event that combines all the disciplines in other individual events like running, cycling, paddling, kloofing, orienteering, all into one event and add a teamwork factor,” she added.

“The routes challenge individuals, and their ability to work in a team, to succeed in a tough environment, showing its not just a physical challenge but a mental one too.”

As always, the race doubles as regional qualifier for the South African Adventure Racing champs.

Adding to the excitement is the fact that the national event is returning to Lilyfontein in October after the school last hosted it in 2013.

And with the Eastern Cape one of the premier places to host these kind of events and Lilyfontein always at the forefront, it is a good fit.

“As Chairman of SA Schools Adventure Racing, I am so proud to be bringing the SA Schools Champs back to the Eastern Cape,” Mitchell said.

“We have the most amazing environment here for adventure racing with hills, valleys, riverbeds, sea, beach and miles of dirt roads to explore.” The Lilyfontein Adventure race takes place on September 2 and 3 and the SA Adventure racing champs is on October 2 and 3.
