The Border Rugby fraternity was this past weekend rocked by the sudden passing of well known and talented wing Sive Mbebe.

The 25-year-old former Walter Sisulu University student and current Swallows player, was out with friends in Mdantsane after his game on Saturday when he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the hospital according to Border commercial and marketing manager Akhona Mgijima.

“From Border rugby’s point of view we are devastated to have lost such a young talent at a tender age and our condolences go out to the family,” said Mgijima.

“He was one of the players that the Bulldogs management have had their eye on and he still had many more years of rugby ahead of him.”

Mbebe made his name while playing for the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) All Blacks in the Super League for the past three years.

He represented the Border Urban team in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and had been selected for the team again this year with the Amateur Provincial Competition scheduled to be played in George later this month.

He also played for the Border Sevens team in 2014 and 2015 and was awarded player of the tournament in 2015.

“He was a very good player,” noted Mgijima.

“He was originally from Idutywa, but had moved to Cape Town where he was spotted in one of the Easter Tournaments and WSU invited him to come and study and play rugby at the University, where he graduated in April this year.”

Since then he had moved to East London and played for Swallows in the Super League.

“He wanted progression in his rugby career and also was looking for a stable job,” explained Mgijima.

A memorial service for Mbebe will take place at Walter Sisulu in Potsdam at 1pm tomorrow and the funeral service will take place in Idutywa on Sunday.

“Sive was my pillar of strength, he left us while we had great expectations from him as a family,” said his mother Nocollege Mbebe.
