Border to take on Africa sides

By ROSS ROCHE

Africa Cup cricket action is fast approaching and the 2016/2017 South African cricket season looks to get going with a bang when the T20 competition takes place over September.

Thirteen teams from across the country as well as Namibia, Kenya and Zimbabwe will compete for the title over four stages set to be played in Pietermaritzburg, East London, Oudtshoorn and Paarl on consecutive weekends.

Cricket South Africa yesterday released the official fixtures for the tournament and teams will now know who they will be facing and when.

“It is nice to see the fixtures have been released as now we can start planning our strategy for the tournament,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“We have a tough pool but we have home ground advantage which is always a good thing.”

With Border hosting the second round from September 9-11, six matches will be battled out at Buffalo Park between the hosts, Zimbabwe, Free State and Easterns, with the top placed team after the weekend going through to the semifinals.

Border will open their campaign against Easterns on the Friday and then play Zimbabwe on Saturday, with both games starting at 4.30pm.

On Sunday they play their last match against Free State with that game getting under way at 11.45am.

“We don’t mind when we play because either way you are not sure if you will bowl or bat first until the toss, so we have to prepare for every situation,” said Plaatjes.

This is the first time that East London will be hosting this tournament and with a number of Protea and Zimbabwe internationals possibly set to compete for the various sides it could be a very interesting few days of cricket for supporters in the region.
