Massive Masters hockey action was on show yesterday with the South African Masters tournament into its second day of play.

In two big clashes at Greenfields Park (Buffalo Flats Astro), the Border women’s team and Border men’s side both duly turned on the style to put on an impressive show of clinical finishing.

The women, playing in the A division, first cruised to a 5-1 win over KwaZulu-Natal, to get their first win of the tournament, while the Border men’s team, playing in the D division, followed them with a thumping 7-1 victory against Diggers.

Playing in the lunch time match, defending A league champs Border went into their third match still looking for a win after drawing their opening two.

There was a fast start from both teams with the ball heading from one side to the next and then KZN took the lead. They were awarded a penalty corner, the ball was passed to Robyn Wiggett who stepped forward and struck the ball in the bottom right-hand corner to open the scoring after six minutes.

Border responded immediately and drew level in the 10th minute after Lou van der Vyver hammered a pass into the box where Natasha Luxon was on hand to deflect the ball home.

Border took the lead in the 17th minute when Kirsten Pio scored a great solo goal, receiving the ball just inside the KZN half and setting off on a run that ended with her hammering the ball in from the top of the D.

Border continued playing well the rest of the half but couldn’t add to their tally, going into the break 2-1 up.

It took just five minutes for Border to score in the second half. Skipper Gill Barbour slotted home after beating the keeper to a ball passed into the D.

The hosts were in the zone and continued pressing, eventually earning a penalty corner in the 45th minute, with the initial shot saved but Barbour was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Six minutes later and Border scored their fifth with Luxon hammering in her second from a penalty corner to seal the win.

“We are happy with the win, we didn’t start the game well, but we came back and got a good win in the end,” said Barbour.

“We knew KZN would be a tough game, so we had to play well which we did and got the win we needed.”

With the crowd having just seen an exciting game the Border men were now tasked with keeping them entertained, which they did.

The 7-1 win was set up by captain Greg Davis and Ralton Fortuin who both scored hattricks.
