Springbok Sevens rugby action officially got under way yesterday afternoon as the Blitzbokke kicked off their Rio Olympics campaign at the Deordora Stadium.

Playing in pool B, the Blitzbokke opened with a 24-0 win over Spain in their first game yesterday after leading 14-0 at half time.

They scored two tries in each half to get their challenge off to a good start.

Next was a match against France last night and the team will finish their group stage against Australia at 4.30pm this afternoon.

Ex-Stirling High school pupil Tim Agaba is in the squad, and he will be aiming to make an impact and help lead the team to Olympic glory.

Agaba started his rugby career after school playing for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Madibaz and then featured for the Eastern Province Kings in the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup.

During his time at the Kings he was called up to the national sevens team and successfully forced his way into their plans as after leaving the Kings at the end of last year he was given a full time sevens contract.

He is among a host of star players including SA’s leading points scorer Cecil Afrika who, speaking before the first match, said he believed the team was ready.

“The guys are excited and looking forward to kickoff,” said Afrika.

“We believe in our preparation, which has gone well.

“We just have to go out there and execute what we have prepared for on the field.”

Should the team make it through the group stage they will be in action again tomorrow night with the quarterfinals taking place.

The semifinals and final are scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon and night.

Blitzbok squad: Kyle Brown (captain), Tim Agaba, Philip Snyman, Werner Kok, Dylan Sage, Kwagga Smith, Rosko Specman, Cheslin Kolbe, Cecil Afrika, Justin Geduld, Juan de Jongh, Seabelo Senatla
