A couple of exciting results were had over the weekend as school rugby teams continued their rivalry with this season concluding in the coming weeks.

In the biggest result of the weekend Selborne College claimed a nailbiting 16-13 victory over hosts Dale College in their massive derby matchup.

The result ended a fantastic 11-match winning streak for Dale, who had previously only lost to Glenwood at the Kearsney Easter Tournament, and had beaten everyone they had faced on the Border up to this weekend.

It was also revenge for Selborne as they made amends for their early season 24-19 loss at Selborne against Dale.

In the weekend’s match an exciting end to the game was had with the result able to go either way until the final whistle.

Selborne started the match well and took a 16-0 lead into the halftime break thanks to a try from Sibahle Kuhlane and a successful conversion and three penalties from the boot of David Coetzer.

Dale replied in the second half with Lunathi Fonte dotting down and Siphosethu Dlongodlongo adding the extras and kicking two penalties to bring Dale within three.

That was, however, as close as they got as their run was ended, but having won 15 games and lost just two this season it has been a great year for Dale rugby and they will look to end it on a high with matches against Hudson Park and Queen’s College to follow.

Selborne will be happy having picked up their sixth win in a row and 13th overall among two draws and three losses, and they will aim to take this momentum into their final match of the season against Grey High School this coming weekend.

In another big clash, Stirling High School managed to claim a hard-fought 17-15 win over rivals Cambridge High School in their derby match.

This was a top result for Stirling, who have had a couple of close losses this season that could have gone either way.

It was an unfortunate loss for Cambridge after they had picked up some momentum with a run of three wins, only to be stopped in their tracks by Stirling.

Stirling will now try to end their season with another good win over Port Rex this coming weekend, while Cambridge must prepare to face Hudson in their final match next weekend.

In other matches, Queen’s beat Grens 36-22, while Hudson Park went down to Grey High 39-18, and must now prepare for big matches against Dale and Cambridge to end their season.

Queen’s responded well from their previous weekend’s loss to Selborne and claimed a good win against Grens, setting them up well for their final match of the season against Dale next weekend, while Grens will look to bounce back against Union this weekend.
