Club rugby action kicks up a notch this weekend as local sides MPM Old Selbornians and EL Police head into their second matches of this year’s Gold Cup competition.

Old Boys will be hosting Worcester Villagers at Mike Pendock Motors Park while EL Police will be heading to Port Elizabeth for their big Eastern Cape derby against PE Police.

With Old Boys and EL Police both having lost their opening games, Old Boys against defending champs Durbanville-Bellville almost two weeks ago and Police against Belaz Sishen this past weekend, both teams will know how important it is that they get a win this weekend.

“The guys are in really good spirits, the excitement and vibe is there and the guys know what they need to go out and do on Saturday,” said Old Boys coach David McCallum.

Only the top two placed teams in each of the five team groups will make it to the quarterfinals of this year’s competition, so with Old Boys bottom of Pool A and EL Police second bottom of Pool D a win will be extremely essential in getting their campaigns going and getting them back in the mix.

Worcester Villagers sit just one place above Old Boys in group A, having also played a game more, with their only points so far coming from a bonus point picked up for scoring four tries in their first match loss against Welkom Rovers.

They will thus be extremely motivated to get a win and will be going all out against Old Boys.

Their last match was, however, a 53-10 drubbing at the hands of Durban Collegians and they will also need to improve from that against Old Boys.

Old Boys will also be looking to improve, although they were very competitive in their first round loss where they trailed the 2015 champs 16-14 at halftime, before a yellow card gave Durbanville-Bellville the upperhand in the second half to go on and win 40-14.

Playing at home should, however, give them a lift and they will be confident of getting a win this weekend.

“Mike Pendock Motors came on board as our sponsors this year and their support has been absolutely amazing, and Mike Pendock himself comes and watches our games, so we just want to put on a good display for Mike and the other sponsors and supporters who come out and cheer us on every game,” explained McCallum.

In the PE match, hosts PE Police currently sit in second on the log with a win and a loss so far in the competition, and head into the game off the back of a 40-24 loss against Pretoria Police.

So both teams will be wanting to bounce back from their respective defeats and get a good win over their close rivals.

“It is going to be a massive match. We will need to be at the top of our game and will have to match them in all facets of the game,” said EL Police coach Alistair Alexander.

Both matches kick off at 3.30pm on Saturday: Old Boys v Worcester Villagers at Mike Pendock Motors Park (Old Selbornians), and EL Police v PE Police at Kemsley Park in PE.
