The ever popular annual Gandhi Walk is back on the calendar and ready to take place next week on the first Sunday of October.

It is the event’s 10th edition and will see a whole host of participants taking on the popular route, which gets under way from Oxford Striders.

“We hold the Gandhi Walk on the first Sunday of October so it can be as close to Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday as possible, with it being on the day this year,” said organiser Ashwin Soma.

“The walk is held in the spirit of bringing communities together, working towards a common cause and assisting the needy, which is what we strive towards.”

Each year the event chooses a worthy cause to support, and this year it is the Carel du Toit centre for kids with hearing disabilities that will be receiving the proceeds.

“We always take advice from the community on who our next beneficiary should be and this year we chose the Carel du Toit centre,” said Soma.

“It is a really good cause and we didn’t realise exactly what they did until we went there and saw ourselves, and it is some really amazing work.”

Some of the children from the centre and their parents will be coming out and taking part on the day.

“We try and encourage the beneficiary to come and take part as well, so we are glad that they will be with us on the day,” enthused Soma.

This year the event will have a bit of a twist as a run has also been included for the first time, so they will have a staggered start on the day, with the runners heading off first, followed by the walkers.

“In previous years we have always had people saying that they want to run, so this year we decided to add the run to the event,” said Soma.

Last year over 1400 participants turned out for the event, and this time the organisers are expecting around 2000.

“It is a big jump in numbers, but last year we were expecting 1200 and we ended up with over 1400, so this year we thought let’s go for the 2000 and see if we can get it,” said Soma.

Entry for the event is R50 per person, with free T-shirts to the first 2000 entrants, and includes a free meal to all entrants.

There will also be lucky draw prizes on the day.

Other activities will also be at the venue, making it a morning out for the whole family.

“We will have Gordon Graham, who will be deejaying for us for the morning, and there will be jumping castles for the kids and a free meal, which is vegetarian but is very tasty, and it is really a great morning out for the family,” said Soma.

The run gets under way at 10am on October 2.
