Fuzile’s weight under spotlight ahead of clash

The weighty issues affecting Duncan Village boxer Azinga Fuzile have suddenly made his official weigh-in at Mdantsane Fitness Joint this afternoon a must-see event.

Fuzile was overweight at midweek premedical for his eagerly-anticipated SA featherweight title clash scheduled to be held at Orient Theatre in East London tomorrow evening.

This prompted Boxing SA-Eastern Cape manager Phakamile Jacobs to issue a strong warning that he would cancel the fight if Fuzile still reports overweight at a specially arranged session yesterday morning.

However, Fuzile requested that his weight be checked after a training session yesterday evening.

Jacobs confirmed that he received a special plea from the camp of the Duncan Village boxer to go and weigh him yesterday evening.

“I agreed to that request because in essence Fuzile was not grossly overweight at the premedical,” he said.

“It was just a couple of grams and I believe he will be able to shed them at today official weigh-in ceremony.”

Jacobs said if Fuzile again came in overweight he would be allocated two hours to shed the excess weight failing which the promoter will take a decision on whether to go ahead with the fight or not.

Fight promoter Ayanda Matiti issued a warning at the premedical that an overweight boxer would forfeit 40% of his fight earnings with a percentage going to his opponent while the rest will be split between the promoter and BSA as per the rule.

But Fuzile’s trainer Mzamo Njekanje has allayed fears that the situation would come to that.

“There is nothing to worry here, so Fuzile’s fans can relax,” he said.

“We are on something here, so there’s no need to press panic batons.”

Despite his obvious battle with the scales, Fuzile still looked ripped and ready for the biggest fight of his short professional career.

With only four fights under his belt, the 20-year-old Duncan Village southpaw is widely picked to smash Sinyabi to defeat and set his own career into bigger things.

But Matiti, who has suddenly assumed the role of being Sinyabi’s spokesman, is dismissing Fuzile as too green to beat the experienced Mdantsane hero.

In midweek premedical, Matiti spent about half an hour trying to convince the crowd why Fuzile is going to lose in an unprecedented move when a promoter is supposed to neutral.

“I am not going to be neutral here because Macbute is my boxer and we are going to send this young boy packing,” Matiti even declared.

He revealed that he and Fuzile’s promoter Teris Ntuthu who was absent at the premedical had entered into a R20000 bet on their respective boxers.

The fans will also get an opportunity to bet on the two boxer at sport bet outlets at Boxer Supermarket store in Duncan Village and online.
