Schools set to slug it out for glory

Exciting school cricket action is on the cards this weekend as the annual Cambridge High School cricket festival takes place from tomorrow until Monday next week around East London.

Despite schools breaking for holidays the cricketers will be getting in some extra training as they take part in the popular event that is hosting its 22nd edition.

Twelve teams from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal will be playing over the four days of intense action.

“This is a big tournament and it just gives the local schools an opportunity to play against schools that they don’t usually play, which is good for them,” said organiser Mark Berndt.

“It is also great for the kids and coaches to interact with other schools and the general camaraderie of it all.”

Twenty six games will be played across all three formats, with T20 up first tomorrow and Saturday, followed by declaration cricket on Sunday and then limited overs on Monday.

Although there is no overall winner of the festival action should still be fierce as teams battle it out to get one over the other.

“There is no winner at the end of the day, the teams obviously do want to win their matches but no one is crowned as a winner of the festival, its more about just having fun and building momentum for the last bit of the season,” said Berndt.

The participating teams include local sides Cambridge, Stirling, Hudson Park Invitation, Selborne Invitation, Border Development and the Canon Shield XI from East London, Wartburg Kirchdorf School, George Campbell High School and Howick High School all from Kwazulu Natal and then Westering, Victoria Park, and Pearson High Schools from Port Elizabeth.

“There will be a number interesting games to watch over the festival, our local sides will want to do well and the PE and KZN teams won’t want to head home off losses, so there should be plenty of exciting cricket to enjoy,” said Berndt.

All fixtures will be played on local school fields with Hudson Park, Selborne and Stirling all offering their fields for use along with the hosts two fields.
