As some of the top bodybuilders are polishing up their preparations for the Southern Africa Bodybuilding Championships in Mthatha tomorrow, a war of words has erupted with everyone eyeing the ultimate prize.

Mike Adonis is brimming with confidence saying this will be a walk in the park for him when he becomes the last man standing.

But Adonis will not have it easy because Mdantsane-born and former Mr Border, Mveliso Tapi has also setting his sights on the big prize.

Although the duo compete in different divisions, with Adonis in the middleweight while Tapi is a welterweight, the two can meet in the category for the overall winner who goes home R50000 richer should they top their respective division.

There will be nine divisions in the competition, a second of its kind, with winner per division meeting in the final for the big prize.

Adonis, currently the reigning Mr South Africa in bodybuilding, is beyond confident that he will come up tops without a hassle.

His overconfidence, he said, stems from the hardwork he put in in preparation for the event and bolstered by his heroics on the national stage.

But he better be careful of dark-horses such as Tapi who may well pull an upset.

Adonis is having none of this. He believes, as politicians like to brag, “victory is certain”.

“This really is going to be a walk in the park for me because I have done my homework,” said Adonis.

“I have huge expectations because I have already beaten my personal best which was to be a national champion which I am right now. Therefore, I am confident of being the last man standing in Mthatha.

“With that said I can guarantee fans a spectacular and prestigious show because several top bodybuilders from across the country will be competing,” he went on.

The 37-year-old Tapi said his focus for now was to win his division, adding that being an overall champion would be the bonus he was looking for.

“I am not one to look at competition and much talk about what will happen before the event even starts, I let my stage performance do the talking,” said Tapi.

“I am honoured though to be part of a competition that is assembled in the name of an icon like OR Tambo which makes me excited and I must say I am looking forward to the event.”

Division winners will walk away with R750 while runners-up will pocket R500 whereas those in third place in their divisions will score R300.

Besides the male competitions, there will be female and juniors competitions on the night.

Today the organisers will hand out sport kits and equipment to four schools in and around Mthatha as an initiative to encourage school sport.

Meanwhile the Walter Sisulu University will receive new cricket mats and wickets.

The SABB Champions are the brainchild of KM Sports Promotion and Events of Khaya Majeke who this year has partnered with the department of sport, recreation, arts and culture; WSU and the OR Tambo District Municipality. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
