Mini-cricket kids will be out in droves today as they take part in the KFC mini-cricket festival at the Khaya Majola Oval in Mthatha.

It is the second mini-cricket festival in the Eastern Cape this week after the first was held in East London on Tuesday and concludes in the province with the third festival in Port Elizabeth tomorrow.

Mthatha event will see around 800 kids from around the region taking part in the event.

Former Protea and mini-cricket ambassador Mfuneko Ngam will be at the event, giving tips and checking out the talent like he was at the East London one earlier in the week.

“It was great to see all the youngsters in East London having fun and enjoying the game. It is a great initiative and I enjoy being a part of it,” said Ngam.

“I went to the Mthatha event last year and it was a lot of fun.

“This year it is going to be even better. People in Mthatha love cricket and we are able to reach more and more schools and kids each year, which is very exciting and I am happy to be a part of it.”

Ngam is very passionate about mini-cricket and believes it is integral in getting the kids ready for playing hardball cricket.

“You know this is where it all starts. Mini-cricket is such an important part in getting kids into cricket and starting them on the road to success,” said Ngam.

“If our coaches could really focus hard on these youngsters and getting them into the game it would help cricket in the country immensely.”

Last year Nomandi Junior Secondary school, from the village of Montisini near Port St Johns, won the chance to play the Proteas during the KFC mini-cricket Proteas v Kids tour.

They won the match convincingly after Ngam had done a coaching session with them and he wanted to see the progress made at the school since then and went to check up on them yesterday.

“One of CSA’s targets is to bring cricket to everyone and with KFC on board it is really helping this become a reality,” said Ngam.

“I was so amazed when we came to this school last year and saw the kind of talent that we saw here. They had no pitch or anything and the players were so excited and dedicated.

“They were the only team in the area that played cricket and it was great to see their passion despite the difficulties.”

Nomandi will be one of the schools at today’s festival in Mthatha and like the other schools in attendance will be aiming to have a lot of fun.

The action gets under way from 11am and should finish at around 2pm.
