Border star all-rounder Darryl Brown will reach a major milestone tomorrow when he plays the 100th first class match of his career against Northerns at Buffalo Park.

Brown has been a stalwart of the Border cricket set-up since making his one day debut in 2004, and then his first class debut the following year in October 2005.

He has since gone on to feature 99 times for Border and the Warriors in the longer format of the game, and he will be aiming to bring up his hundred in style this week.

“I haven’t really given it much thought, but I am blessed that I have been able to have played so many games,” said Brown.

So far this season Brown has been superb with the bat, not losing his wicket in three innings and solid with the ball and he will aim to continue that against Northerns.

Against North West he scored 57no and picked up 1/39 and 1/45 in two innings and against Free State he score 53no and 12no while picking up 2/58.

“I have done well so far this season and I want to continue,” said Brown.

“I would like to get a hundred against Northerns and maybe grab a fifer (five wicket haul), which would be a great way to celebrate my hundredth first class match.”

At 33 years of age Brown is heading into the twilight of his career and he will be eager to put in as many top performances for Border as he possibly can.

His overall first class batting record stands at 3602 runs scored at an average of 27.08, with two centuries and 21 fifty’s to his name and a highest score of 112no.

On the bowling front Brown has taken 193 wickets at an average of 25.85, with three five wicket hauls, 10 four wicket hauls and best bowling figures in an innings of 6/32 and 9/66 in a match.

“I have really enjoyed playing the game. I have loved every minute of it and the lessons learnt over the years have stood me in good stead over my career,” said Brown.

“I have a huge desire to play as long as possible, as well as help others.”

“If there is one small regret over my career it would be that I would have liked to play more franchise cricket, but I have loved playing for Border and I am happy with the way things have gone.”

During his career for Border Brown picked up numerous awards, including each of the big three of player, batsman and bowler of the season for the semi-pro team.

His form has stayed true into the back end of his career, with him even turning out for the Warriors limited overs team last year in four matches in a row.

“Darryl has been one of the most unfortunate cricketers in that he should have played a lot more at the next level, but missed opportunities and other circumstances meant he missed out,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“But he has been an extremely loyal player for Border over the years. He has had offers from other provinces, but has stuck with us the whole time.”

Plaatjes is also confident that Brown still has a big role to play at Border and will do so for the foreseeable future.

“Darryl has always been a very knowledgeable player and constantly adds value to the team, no matter the circumstances.

“He contributes with the bat and the ball and always encourages the younger players, so I believe he can continue playing for another few years.”

Border Cricket CEO Thando Booi was also quick to praise Brown’s contribution to Eastern Cape cricket: “He has served the game well and has been an asset to Border cricket.”

Brown will be in action against Northerns at Buffalo Park tomorrow.
