Sisa gets the thumbs up

Football fans in Mdantsane can brace themselves for top-notch football action in their backyard as early as next month.

This after the domestic league’s controlling body yesterday said that the Sisa Dukashe Stadium had met PSL standards.

As such, said PSL media manager Luxolo September, the MultiChoice Diski Challenge on December 3-4 was bound for the NU2-based soccer field.

To top it all, Chippa United boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi said he was now targeting the same venue for their meeting with African champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Valentine’s Day next year.

Mpengesi, who visited Sisa Dukashe on Wednesday, to inspect the stadium for himself, said he was pleased to be taking the team to the people.

After the MDC festival, in which Chippa’s reserve side is also featured alongside seven other teams including the big three – Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns – Chippa senior team play Highlands Park in a league encounter at the same venue on December 17.

The Chilli Boys chairman expressed happiness with the progress made in fixing up Sisa, adding that taking top-flight football to Mdantsane was always in the works.

Mpengesi said because he felt so indebted to football fans in East London, for their unprecedented support, he would thus like to take Sundowns to Sisa early next year.

“We have had overwhelming support whenever playing in East London hence we have decided that in the five matches we will be taking to the Metro, they deserve a big one closer to where they stay hence we are bringing Mamelodi Sundowns to Mdantsane on February 14,” said Mpengesi.

PSL’s September described Sisa’s state of readiness as almost a done deal.

According to him, provincial MEC for sport, recreation, arts and culture Pemmy Majodina deserved a special mention for putting pressure on the powers that be so as to get the Sisa renovation project off the ground.

“Right now it is a foregone conclusion that the MDC festival on December 3 and 4 will be live in Sisa Dukashe Stadium,” said September.

“A lot of work has been done and we are happy to announce that the stadium does meet the PSL minimum requirements.

“All that is left now is for us to do the final inspection of a few small technicalities in the next week or so but that changes nothing in terms of the decision made to take MDC to Mdantsane.”

Over the past few weeks Sisa has received a major facelift.

Workers braved yesterday’s rain and were hard at work with final touchups – such as the painting of change-rooms and adding colour to the concrete stands.

Mpengesi said moving Chippa from Buffalo City Stadium in the city to Sisa in the township would guarantee his team a bigger crowd. — zingisam@dispacth.co.za
